Chris Crutcher Chris Crutcher

Last updated on: January 29, 2010

One of a select few to receive the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in writing for teenagers, Chris Crutcher has been a standout in the world of books for young people since his first novel, Running Loose, was published in 1983. Since then, every one of his novels and short stories has been a hit with teens, teachers, and librarians. In fact, the American Library Association lists five of his books among the one hundred Best of the Best Books for Young Adults published during the last four decades of the twentieth century. Informed by his background as a child and family therapist, Crutcher's portrayals of teenagers dealing with very painful personal conflicts are handled with humor, sensitivity, and insights that few adults ever achieve. His writing has the power to change lives.
