Every one of Sarah Dessen's novels for young people has received high praise and been voted a Best Book for Young Adults, some of them considered to be among the best books of the year. In each case, her main character is a contemporary teenage girl who faces and learns to deal with a variety of life's problems: a parent's remarriage, a best friend's pregnancy, falling in love, accepting herself, and in Dreamland, drugs and an abusive boyfriend. But these are not typical "teenage problem" books; these are novels with depth and subtlety. The issues are complex; the sometimes quirky characters are richly drawn; the language is crisp and often witty.
